Defying Tomorrow

Defying Tomorrow

February 3, 2011 My Poetry Writing 3

People will break your heart,
But what can you do about it?

Take my heart and turn it into a friggin’ omelette
Break my heart over and over, I don’t care.
The chicken can always lay another egg.

There’s a long distance between people.
That’s why I keep building spaceships,
Hoping someday to break the speed of light
And reach the secret behind your eyes.

Kids grow up too fast these days.
I look around for that kid behind me,
The person I used to be
Where did she go?

I go to sleep saying,”Tomorrow I will kick ass,”
Not so much because I believe it,
But because I enjoy the sound
Of my own swaggering bravado.

Tomorrow, I will kick ass.
Watch out, Tomorrow!
(Yeah, right.)
(Like Tomorrow’s afraid of me.)

All those little hearts hatching out there
Learning to fly too soon.
The weight of all their tomorrows,
Dragging them down.

I wish they knew what I knew.
I wish they knew.

  1. This entry strongly reminds me of a line from a Bob Seger song (Against the Wind).
“Wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then.”

  2. Jay says:

My favorite line(s) from this wonderful poem.

Hoping someday to break the speed of light
And reach the secret behind your eyes.

So very meaningful and deep. Thank you Charlotte for writing this and sharing it.

  3. Gretchen says:

Ignorance or knowledge, neither one seems to help. I’ll stick with “the chicken can always lay another egg.”
